Best Practices for Assessment and Intervention. Dr. Sam Marzouk will focus on two related but distinct areas on the self-harm spectrum. First, he will discuss adolescent suicidality and present relevant research on the risk factors and warning signs. He will also spend ample time discussing best practices for intervening from creating a safety plan to effectively advising parents/caregivers on how to respond to suicidality. Next, he will discuss non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSIB; e.g., cutting). Dr. Marzouk will explain how while there is a relationship between suicidal behavior and NSSIB, they are two very different constructs. He will explain theories on why teens engage in this behavior, offer strategies for how to discuss this with teens, and strategies for how to collaborate with caregivers and teens to prevent future instances of NSSIB.
