Nurturing Racial Understanding: A Journey of Compassion and Learning for Adoptive Parents in Transracial/Interracial Adoption by Astrid Castro, CEO & Founder of Adoption Mosaic (https://adoptionmosaic.com/). Sponsored by Holt International (https://www.holtinternational.org/).

Embarking on the journey of transracial/interracial adoption comes with unique challenges and opportunities, especially when it comes to navigating issues of race and racism. This all day in-person workshop is crafted specifically for adoptive parents, providing a compassionate space to delve into the complexities of race and racism through the lens of the transracial/interracial adoptee experience.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding Historical Context: Delve into the history of transracial adoption in the United States, gaining insights into its significance and evolution. Understand why this historical context is crucial for parents to grasp in order to nurture culturally informed parenting practices.
  • Fostering Race Conversations: Learn practical strategies for initiating and sustaining conversations about race with your BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) adoptees, regardless of their age. Explore ways to create a safe and supportive environment for these discussions within your family.
  • Engaging with Extended Community: Gain insights into navigating conversations about race and racism with extended family members and the broader community. Discover the importance of building a network of support that embraces diversity and promotes cultural understanding.
  • Empowering Children: Equip yourself with tools and techniques to help your child(ren) understand, identify, and navigate race and racism beyond the confines of your home. Explore age-appropriate approaches to fostering resilience and confidence in facing racial challenges.

Through interactive exercises, experiential learning activities, and supportive group discussions, this workshop aims to meet you where you are in your journey of adoptive parenting. Together, we will explore, learn, and grow in our understanding of race and racism, fostering an environment of compassion, empathy, and cultural sensitivity within your family unit.
